Tying Current Events into the Bible

I won't be going to church tomorrow.  And I am not happy about it because I do not like to miss the morning worship service, the breaking of bread and taking the cup which we do on a weekly basis.

The reason I am not going is because the man who is speaking is all about prophesy, the book of Revelation and current events and I am not about speculations and politics. It is a sadness to me that there are people in our church who hang on his every word.

Ever since I became  a Christian in 1987 I have heard the same old thing, trying to tie current events into the bible, whether it be the books of Daniel, Ezekiel or most often, Revelation.  I heard it said that Henry Kissinger was the antichrist but he was not, or that Obama was the antichrist, but he was not.  One man said the Lord was coming in 1993 because he thought the world would not go on past the year 2000 and therefore, with the 7 year tribulation, the Lord had to return in 1993.  But  he did not.  However for that man, in 1995 he died, and went to be with his Lord.  Last year a couple told us that the "rapture" was going to be in 2018 because that was a generation since Israel became a nation in 1948.  When December came they said they were trying to figure out how long a generation was.  I am sure that in earlier years, people thought that Hitler was the antichrist, but he was not.

So what is the point of trying to tie current events into the bible?  and why do people seem to hang on the words of anyone who speaks what they call "prophecy".  I think the reason is that they spend too much time watching the TV news and they are so caught up in the thought of a pre-trib rapture and a 7 year tribulation that they are willing to listen to and believe whatever they are told about the matter.

The truth though is that Christians are not to know the day or the hour, the times or the seasons of the Lord's return.  Let the bible speak:

Acts 1:6-7 "....Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel?  And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power...

1 Thessalonians 5:1 (after the Lord's teaching of the catching up of believers when he comes again) "But of the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no need that I write unto you."  And Jesus says that we are to (V6) watch and be sober.

Matthew 24:36 "But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only."
Matthew 25:13 "Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh."
Mark 13:32 "but of that  day and that hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels which are in heaven, neither the Son, but the Father.
Mark 13:33 "take ye heed, watch and pray: for ye know not when the time is.

Speculation about current events is a waste of time..   far better to read your bible and know that the Lord Jesus is coming again.  When we do not know, but it is one day closer than it was yesterday and that is enough for me.
