Tamar, Daughter-in-law of Judah: Who Is the Righteous One?

Today in my reading of the book of Genesis,  here is the somewhat disturbing story of Tamar, the daughter-in-law of Judah, the son of Jacob.

Chapter 38 begins with Judah leaving his brothers  and seeing a daughter of a Canaanite whose name was Shuah.  By her Judah had two sons, one named Er and the other named Onan.  After this Shuah bore to Judah another son called Shelah.

In the process of time, Judah took a wife for his firstborn Er, and her name was Tamar.  But the bible tells us that Er was "wicked in the sight of the LORD, and the LORD slew him."  Judah told his next son Onan to marry Tamar that  he should "raise up seed to thy brother."  Because Onan knew that any child would not be considered his, he denied Tamar a child by him.  But what he did "displeased the LORD: wherefore he slew him also."

Next Judah tells Tamar to stay as a widow in her father's house until his youngest son Shelah reached  adulthood,  but Judah fears "lest peraventure he die also, as his brethren did"  Tamar obeys and went and dwelt in her father's house.

Time passes and Tamar is still in her father's house when she hears that Judah is coming to shear his sheep, so she puts off her widow's garments and veils herself.  Next she sits in open view where Judah will pass because "she saw that Shelah was grown, and she was not given unto him to wife."

Jacob's Daughter Dinah: Choosing the Wrong Path

I am reading through the book of Genesis at this time.  Today I read about Dinah, the only daughter of Jacob who was the son of Isaac, who was the son of Abraham.    This is a very sad story of what happened to Dinah when she went out on her own from her family.  I wrote this piece in 2002 and want to post it here today.

Jacob's Daughter Dinah

Genesis 30:21 "And afterwards she (Jacob's wife Leah) bare a daughter, and called her name Dinah"  (judgment)

Genesis 33: 18 "And Jacob came to Shalem, a city of Shechem, which is in the land of Canaan, when he came from Padanaram; and pitched his tent before the city.  And he bought a parcel of a field, where he had spread his tent, at the hand of the children of Hamor, Shechem's father, for an hundred pieces of money. "

In Genesis chapter 33 we have the reconciliation of Jacob and Esau who had been separated since Jacob deceived his father Isaac into believing that he was Esau, and thus took the blessing that was meant for Esau.  At Jacob's mother Rebekah's urging, Jacob left his home and journeyed to Paddan-aram where Rebekah's family lived.  Jacob went there and lodged with Rachel and her family.  After 20 years Jacob left with his wives Rachel and Leah, their handmaids, and all his children.  Jacob was nervous to meet Esau his  brother, but when they do finally meet Esau treats Jacob and his family with kindness and respect, hospitably offering that Jacob should go with Esau to his home to dwell together in unity, (V12) but Jacob deceives Esau one more time into thinking he will follow along after, then he makes the choice to turn in another direction and go to the land of Canaan, where the Israelites do not live.   (V13-20).  Just as Lot separated from Abraham, and went to the city of Sodom, Jacob will bear the grief of taking things into his own hands instead of following Esau, whom the Lord had graciously restored to him.

Ecclesiastes Chp 1: All is Vanity

It is important to establish who wrote the book of Ecclesiastes for this book is all about man on this earth, and ends with the duty of the whole matter, and that is to fear God and to keep his commandments. The writer identifies himself as the son of David, king in Jerusalem. It is further shown to be Solomon by V13 and 16, "I gave my heart to seek and search out by wisdom concerning all things that are done under heaven...Lo, I am come to great estate and have gotten more wisdom that all they that have been before me in Jerusalem."  1 Kings 3:9-12 is Solomon asking God for wisdom and God's response: "Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad..and the speech pleased the Lord, that Solomon had asked this thing.  And God said unto him, Because thou hast asked this thing, and hast not asked for thyself long life; neither hast asked riches for thyself, nor hast asked the life of thine enemies; but hast asked for thyself understanding to discern judgment; behold, I have done according to thy words: lo, I have given thee a wise and an understanding heart; so that there was none like thee before thee, neither after thee shall any arise like unto thee."

Chapter 1:2-3 "Vanity of vanities saith the preacher, vanity of vanities; all is vanity.  What profit hath a man of all his labour which he taketh under sun?  One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh: but the earth abideth forever."

What is vanity?  According to Websters 1828 dictionary, vanity is emptiness; want of substance to satisfy desire; uncertainty.   Man in his fallen state is full of desires but nothing he can gather or buy can truly satisfy him for he is lost.  Even though an unsaved person might deny that this is true, they know in their heart that it is true for they desire more and more.

Psalm 51: Create in Me a Clean Heart

Psalm 51 is to me one of the most beautiful of Psalms, and is another one from which a chorus was written.

This Psalm was written by David after his sin of adultery with Bathsheba was exposed by the prophet Nathan.  His words are ones of sorrow for his sin, and brokenness before the Lord God.

V1-4 "Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions.  Wash me thoroughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.  For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me.  Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest."

This is surely a contrite heart,  one which acknowledges his sin, and one which seeks restored fellowship with his Lord.  Even though David's sin was first against Bathsheba (for he saw her and sent his men to bring her to him) and secondly to her husband Uriah (whom he had placed in the front of a battle so he would be killed)  David's true sin was against God whose commandments David had broken.

Psalm 37: Trust the Lord in the Midst of Trials

For the first post in November,  here are a few verses and thoughts from Psalm 37:

V1-3 "Fret not thyself because of evildoers, neither be thou envious against the workers of iniquity.  For they shall soon be cut down like the grass, and wither as the green herb.  Trust in the Lord, and do good.....

These verses say to me that Christians ought  not to concern themselves and become anxious about all that goes on in this world of ours.  The Lord is in control and we may trust in him to take care of things according to his will.   Christians are to trust and to do good as we are led.

V4-5 "Delight thyself also in the Lord, and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.  Commit thy way unto the Lord; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass"

As we set our hearts on the Lord, he shall give Christians the desires of our hearts.  Now these are desires according to his will for us in an individual way.  I do not think however, that a desire for riches or worldly goods are things that are according to God's will.

Psalm 34: A Psalm of Comfort

Psalm 34 is one of my favorite Psalms. It is full of encouragement and comfort. If one were good at memorization, this Psalm is one to remember and call to mind in times of trial or when one needs to be uplifted. God’s word is certainly good at uplifting the Christian.

Verses 1-8 are David praising the Lord: these verses are offered without comment, just to read and dwell upon.

I will bless the LORD at all times: his praise shall continually be in my mouth. My soul shall make her boast in the LORD: the humble shall hear thereof, and be glad. O magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt his name together. I sought the LORD and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears….This poor man cried, and the LORD heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles. The angel of the LORD encampeth round about them that fear him, and delivereth them. O taste and see that the LORD is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him.

Verses 13 and 14 are very good advice: Keep thy tongue from evil, and thy lips from speaking guile. Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace and pursue it.

We are to watch our words, think before we speak and measure what we say according to the leading of the word of God. We are not to speak deceitfully or in a cunning and manipulative way. We are to do good and avoid evil, we are to live peaceably as much as is possible.

The next verses are pure comfort to the broken-hearted who calls upon the Lord. V18-19 – The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as are of a contrite spirit. Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the LORD delivereth him out of them all.

As in a previous post, the LORD sees the Christian as righteous through the precious blood of Christ which atoned for the sins of the believer.

Tale of a Lost Cat

I love cats.  In 2008 we adopted a beautiful 1 year old female Torbie (Tortoiseshell/Tabby) from a cat rescue.  She had been abandoned and was very fearful of people.  It took much time and patience but she came to be my sweet and loving companion.  It was very tragic for me when she passed away in her sleep at the age of 4. I found her curled up in the cat sleeping position, dead and rigor mortis had set in.  After that we bought a puppy and there have been no more cats.

Last Saturday morning I was outside watering the front garden when a beautiful orange tabby walked onto the neighbour's driveway and over to me.  He allowed himself to be petted but he was definitely not a cuddly cat.  It was a very hot day and he hung out under a cedar hedge beside our home.  I put out food and water for him which he gobbled down.  Not having any cat food he ate good quality dog food instead. I let him in the back yard where he made himself at home sitting on chairs, even beside me.  I let him in the house but he beat up our little Shih Tzu so out he went.  I wondered  where he came from and had no idea how to find his owner.  I contacted the SPCA and was told to contact the local animal control but I did not want to do that, fearing what his outcome would be.  Saturday night into Sunday morning he walked around howling as male cats do and woke up the neighbours who were not pleased.

After church on Sunday we went to a pet store and purchased some cat food in case he came back.  I told the clerk that it was for a lost cat and she said I should look in his ear for a tattoo to trace the owner.  I wondered if he would ever allow me to get close enough to look in his ear if indeed, he came back.  I put out the new cat food and early Monday morning we heard him howling again and then I looked out to see him eating the food.  I took a few photos of him and went down to pet him and I must say that by now I was getting attached to him, even naming him Buster.

Daily Bible Reading: John 12:1-11 - Mary Annoints Jesus and Judas Protests

John chapter 12 follows the raising of Lazarus from the grave in a mighty display by the Lord Jesus.  After this Lazarus returned to his home and his sisters where a dinner was made for Jesus.  Lazarus was there as well.  It was at this dinner that Mary, the one who sat at Jesus' feet and learned of him, anointed him.  This is where the true personality of Judas, the one who betrayed Jesus, begins to show itself.

V1-2  "Six days before the feast of Passover, Jesus came to Bethany where Lazarus was which had been dead.  There they made him a supper and Martha served: but Lazarus was one of them that sat at the table with him."

To learn where Passover originated, please read Exodus 12.   One cannot help but marvel that Lazarus who had been in the grave for four days was raised free of the illness from which he had died, his body restored.  This time Martha is willingly serving, and does not complain to the Lord about Mary not helping her as she did on a previous occasion. (Luke 10:38-42)

V3 "Then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair: and the house was filled with the odour of the ointment."

For an excellent  explanation of what Spikenard is, please follow this link to Got Questions.  It is speculated that this spikenard might have been Mary's dowry.  She wanted only the best for Jesus.  It is fitting that the one who sat at the feet of Jesus and learned of him would be the one to anoint his feet and dry them not with a towel but with her hair.  In these times hair was the woman's glory and Mary did not hesitate to use her hair in this manner, showing her love and respect for Jesus. The odour of the ointment was so strong and beautiful that it filled the house, thus Mary's act of love for Jesus had an effect on the whole house.

Daily Bible Reading: John 11: 1-16 -The Death of Lazarus

John chapter 11 is full of teaching:  Firstly is the raising of Lazarus.  This is not the first time that Jesus has raised the dead; previously he raised the dead son of a widow while on his way to burial, also the daughter of Jairus, a child of 12.  But Lazarus is different.  He was raised to show forth the glory of God.  Lazarus, unlike the previous two, was already in the tomb, and had been for several days.  He was a person well known to Jesus and loved by him.  Many people witnessed the raising of Lazarus.  Jesus did it in a very public manner while the first two were in a more quiet way.

The raising of Lazarus takes place after the teaching of Jesus that he is The Good Shepherd.  That his sheep hear his voice, that they follow him,  Lazarus heard the voice of Jesus calling him and he came forth.

Also in this chapter is Lazarus' sister Martha.  Jesus gives Martha the assurance of resurrection.  Also here is the shortest verse in the bible "Jesus wept."

V1-3 A certain man named Lazarus was sick.  He was of the town of Bethany, as were his sisters Martha and Mary.   They sent word to Jesus saying "Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick."

From this we know that Martha and Mary were well acquainted with Jesus as they did not hesitate to send word to Jesus that Lazarus was sick.  It is likely that they believed that Jesus would come and heal Lazarus as he had done to so many others.

V4-7  Jesus said to his disciples "this sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby.  Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus."  This verse is confirmation of the close relationship that they had.  But Jesus did not immediately go to Lazarus, he stayed  two more days in the same place because the death of Lazarus was to be very significant.

V7-16 After the two days were up, Jesus told his disciples "let us go to Judea again."  His disciples were surprised at that  because the Jews had wanted to stone Jesus there.  But Jesus said to them "our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep."  His disciples did not understand that Jesus was going to raise Lazarus from the dead, they just thought that Lazarus was sleeping as restful sleep so Jesus told them "Lazarus is dead."  Then Jesus told them that he was glad that he was not there when Lazarus died because it was because of this that they would believe.  Jesus said "nevertheless let us go to him."

My next post will be about Martha, and her assurance of the resurrection of Lazarus.

Jairus' Daughter: a story of faith and trust

Mark 5:21-43   (25-34 is the woman with the issue of blood)

When the Lord was here on earth and did wonderful miracles, he did things that are beyond the powers of men.  The Lord Jesus did these miracles to point to His divinity.  These were things that only God could do.  Jesus' miracles are not recorded in the bible to make us think that we can do the same because we can't do the same, but Christs' power is revealed to encourage us to see that Jesus is God and he can do anything, his power is unlimited.

Nothing is too hard for Jesus.  As Christians, when we see what an almighty and wonderful Jesus we have it is going to strengthen our faith to really believe and trust in him even when it is hard, and even when the world scorns and laughs and there is opposition.  If we see that Jesus is God and he can do anything, then all the scorn of the world will not make any difference whatsoever to us because we really believe in the omnipotent Saviour.  Spurgeon said:  "I believe what I believe and I will believe it even if I believe it alone."  Not dependent upon what other people think, not dependent upon current opinions or what the crowd thinks, not religious fashion, Spurgeon says that faith that is not dependent upon anybody else, but on Christ alone because  he is such a marvelous wonderful Saviour.  This faith only comes through a personal study of the bible.  We really believe what the bible says because we have pondered the scriptures and God has convinced us that this is true and logical and makes complete sense.  When we really believe that, it is not somebody else's faith that has convinced us, but it's our faith,  what we have come to believe and it doesn't matter if the whole world is against us, it makes no difference whatsoever because we are not relying on other people's opinions or feelings, or relying on other people for support. You can really say with Spurgeon, "I believe what I believe and I will believe it even if I believe it alone."  My faith is in Christ.  And that is the purpose of the recording of the miracles in the bible, because Jesus is God and he can do anything and there is no room for doubt at all.  If the almighty God humbled himself and became confined to a human body, then what is there that God cannot do?  Nothing.

God Is...

In this day of the compromising church, emergent teaching and pastors who teach “feel good” sermons, what does the bible say about who God is?  Is he only a God of love?  Who is God to the believer, the Christian, Who was he to the saints of the old testament?  Who is God to the unbeliever?

Regarding Abraham, Gen 21:22 “, God is with thee in all that thou doest:”  Hebrews says that Abraham was a man of faith Heb 11:8,10 “By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went….  For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God.”  Notice that Abraham obeyed the command of God when he was called out.

Deut 33:27 “The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms: ”

2 Samuel 22:33, the words of king David, after his sin with Bathsheba, after his repentance, “God is my strength and power: and he maketh my way perfect”

Psalm 48:14, pure comfort to the believer “For this God is our God for ever and ever: he will be our guide even unto death”

Psalm 59:17 “Unto thee, O my strength, will I sing: for God is my defence, and the God of my mercy.”

Psalm 74:12 “For God is my King of old, working salvation in the midst of the earth.”  This verse certainly shows that it is God who saves, not men who save themselves by “making a decision”

Psalm 89:7 “God is greatly to be feared in the assembly of the saints, and to be had in reverence of all them that are about him.”  God demands reverential fear, fear of who he is, the Sovereign and mighty God.

Proverbs 30:5  “Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him.”   The bible, the word of God, is to be trusted.  But this does not include the modern versions that twist and change the true word of God.

The following verses show that the LORD God is more than love:

Deuteronomy 4:24 “For the LORD thy God is a consuming fire, even a jealous God”

Deut. 6:4-7 teaches that it is not enough to hang on the fact that God is love, the Israelites were, and believers are commanded:  “thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might and these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart:  thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up…”   Do you think upon the Lord during the week? or only on Sunday.  Do you love him? do you talk to others of  the word of God?

Psalm 7:11 “God judgeth the righteous, and God is angry with the wicked every day.”

Nah 1:2 “God is jealous, and the LORD revengeth; the LORD revengeth, and is furious; the LORD will take vengeance on his adversaries, and he reserveth wrath for his enemies”   This verse should make the unbeliever cringe.

Romans 1:18 “For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness”

Galatians 6:7 “Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.”  This is another verse that should prick the heart of the unsaved.

This verse offers hope to the lost:

Romans 6:23 “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”

No SuperBowl Here

So tomorrow is Superbowl Sunday, and I am happy to say that we will not be among the millions that will be watching.  I have always been very thankful that my husband has never been a Sports person.

This morning I was watching the news and it gave the percentages of what takes place during the Superbowl.  I was surprised that only 60% is the actual game, 35% is advertising, and 5% is entertainment.  That is a lot of commercials, and even though Superbowl commercials are always looked forward to, it seems strange to me that a lot of people don’t mind having to wait through all those commercials for the game to continue.  It was quite funny to me that the announcer said that the first Superbowl game was “only” a football game.

It’s interesting to me what “entertainment” is these days.  I looked the word “entertain” up in the bible and here is the only reference:

Hebrews 13:2 “Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares”

Now this is the kind of entertainment that would be truly awesome and wonderful.  Can you imagine entertaining an angel?

Well, one thing for sure, the highways and byways will be very quiet while the game is on, and that is always a good thing.

Why Study Heaven?

This is Part 1 of a series by Paul Dowling  on the subject of Heaven.

Why Study Heaven?

Rev 22:1-6

Glory, Paradise, or Heaven..  we are not studying the atmosphere, the universe or space, but God's dwelling place.  Why study heaven?  Because life in this world distracts us and blots out thoughts of heaven.  Things closer to us are seen to be bigger than eternity but they are not.

Another reason is that through misunderstanding heaven it doesn't appeal to as many people as it should.  You may say "How could heaven not be appealing"?  Some may find it boring, they suppose it to be like a church service that goes on and on, while sitting on a marble seat.  Such a view has limited appeal and is childish.  Some are apathetic about heaven, clumsy at understanding its beauty.   But that is not the biblical view and that is another reason why believers should study heaven from the bible and look at the true biblical portrait.

Another reason is because we can know about it.  1 Corin 2:9 "But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him"  Some people use this text to say we don't know about heaven, you can't picture it, you can't hear it, you can't imagine it so why consider it.  But they need to read the next verse, 10 .  "But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God."   Natural man can't imagine the things that God has prepared, but God has revealed them to believers by his Spirit through his word, the bible.  That is the limit that God has told us about heaven and we can know what he wants us to know.   We are duty bound to study heaven because God has revealed it and whatever God has revealed, we are to study.

We should study heaven because it is a powerful evangelistic weapon.  Look at the world around you, there is a dis-satisfaction with materialism.  Look at people's faces, are they happy?  They are not happy at all, most of them.  There is no joy in materialism, it does not bring happiness or contentedness.  If this life is it, and all we have and we live and then we die and it is over, that is depressing.   How appealing in that situation is heaven..  time is just a vapor but your soul lives forever and can live forever with God securely in heaven, satisfied in a place of indescribable beauty.  A new Paradise where every lie, deceit and wrong has been purged.  What a powerful evangelistic weapon therefore, heaven is.  God offers sinful human beings an eternity of happiness, what a glorious possibility.

Psalm 25: Unto Thee O LORD

Further to my post a day or so ago regarding the words  "I Am" as used in positive thinking, as contrast here is a Psalm of David that shows the heart of a man devoted to the Lord but who was also a man who had sinned regarding Bathsheba and her husband Uriah (2 Samuel 11) and acknowledges that sin before the Lord asking for mercy and forgiveness.   Opposite of positive thinking,  Psalm 25 is a beautiful psalm of  requests, dependence and trust.  David's requests to the Lord are highlighted.
Here is Psalm 25:  (KJV)

Unto thee, O Lord, do I lift up my soul.  O my God, I trust in thee: let me not be ashamed, let not mine enemies triumph over me.  Yea, let none that wait on thee be ashamed: let them be ashamed which transgress without cause.  Show me thy ways, O LORD; teach me thy pathsLead me in thy truth, and teach me: for thou art the God of my salvation; (added by me - David's relationship with the Lord is a personal one)  on thee do I wait all the day.  Remember, O LORD, thy tender mercies and thy lovingkindnesses; for they have been ever of old.  Remember not the sins of my youth, nor my transgressions: according to thy mercy remember thou me for thy goodness' sake, O LORD.  Good and upright is the LORD, therefore will he teach sinners in the way.  The meek will he guide in judgment: and the meek will he teach his way.  All the paths of the LORD are mercy and truth unto such as keep his covenant and his testimonies.  For thy name's sake, O LORD, pardon mine iniquity; for it is great.  What man is he that feareth the LORD? him shall he teach in the way that he shall choose. (added by me - Proverbs 16:9 A man's heart deviseth his way: but the Lord directeth his steps).  His soul shall dwell at ease; and his seed shall inherit the earth.  The secret of the LORD is with them that fear him (added by me - a reverential fear for who God is) and he will show them his covenant.  Mine eyes are ever toward the LORD; for he shall pluck my feet out of the net.  Turn thee unto me, and have mercy upon me; for I am desolate and afflicted.  The troubles of my heart are enlarged: O bring me out of my distresses.  Look upon mine affliction and my pain; and forgive all my sins.  Consider mine enemies; for they are many; and they hate me with cruel hatred.  O keep my soul and deliver me: let me not be ashamed; for I put my trust in thee.  Let integrity and uprightness preserve me; for I wait no thee.  Redeem Israel, O God, out of all his troubles.

Two Simple Words: I Am

I Am - two simple words.    Yesterday I was waiting for our local news to start and caught the last couple of minutes of Dr. Phil's show with Joel Osteen on it promoting his book regarding I am.   In looking up a review for the book online today, it seems to me that that Mr. Osteen's book is about positive thinking - I am this, I am that, I am (put in the word of your choice).
However,  the words "I am" are very precious in the bible, the word of God.  How are the words "I am" used there?  here are a very few and these all speak of deity:

Genesis 17:1 "And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the LORD appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect"

Exodus 3:14 "And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you."

Exodus 20:2 "I am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage."

What does the Lord Jesus say about himself?

John 6:35 "And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst."

John 8:58 "Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am."

John 9:5 "......................I am the light of the world"

John 10:11 "I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep."

And what do men say about themselves using "I am" in the bible?

Psalm 6:2 "Have mercy upon me, O LORD; for I am weak: O LORD, heal me; for my bones are vexed."

Psalm 40:17 "But I am poor and needy; yet the Lord thinketh upon me: thou art my help and my deliverer; make no tarrying, O my God"

Psalm 119:141 "I am small and despised: yet do not I forget thy precepts."

Note that  none of the verses quoted above regarding what men say about themselves are lifting themselves up in a positive way, but they know that there hope is in the Lord, not in themselves.

Therefore, rather you should say, I am a sinner, and I need the Saviour, and then repent and call upon the Lord Jesus Christ who will save your soul.   All the positive thinking in the world will not  bring you to heaven, if you do not recognize your need of the Saviour, and repent of your sins, you are condemned to that place of torment.  The choice is yours.

Church Practice: What is Contributing Considered To Be?

Colossians 3:17 “And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.”

Matthew 4:18,21  “And Jesus, walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers….And going on from thence, he saw other two brethren, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in a ship with Zebedee their father, mending their nets; and he called them.”

Yesterday was quite a sorrowful day for us.  In my previous post I said that my husband and I were “taking a break” from our chapel, and yesterday my husband had a visit from one of the elders.  Before I state what happened at one point, let me say that my husband has a real problem speaking in front of a group of people, he has had this for all the almost 29 years that we have been married.  Rather he chooses to be a helper behind the scenes, whatsoever and wherever he is asked.

With this in mind, at one point the elder told my husband that he did not “contribute”.  And I am dumbfounded because according to the verses quoted above, what is contribution anyway?  “whatsoever ye do in word or deed”   Jesus saw Peter “casting a net”  and he saw James and John “mending their nets”..  I heard a wonderful sermon years ago which I have never forgotten because the speaker said that Peter was the outgoing one, the vocal one while John was the encourager, the quiet one.

And so I go back to the fact that the elder told my husband that he did not “contribute”..  well, that is true that my husband, at breaking of bread, did not read from his bible, nor pray by himself, but he did give out hymns on occasion.  But besides that he was always out the door very early in the morning in all kinds of weather all year round driving the 20 minute drive to another town to pick up some bible school students at the ferry.  He was always the first one at the chapel, putting out the emblems, the bread and the cups.  He took them into the kitchen afterwards.  On Saturday mornings he was out of the house before 6:00am to drive to the chapel to help get ready for the morning men’s prayer breakfast.  He helped take an old library apart and convert it into a beautiful new bathroom..  and many other things I have not mentioned here.  So again, it boggles my mind that this elder said that he did not “contribute”..  My goodness, by their fruits you shall know them.

So I say to you, dear reader,  if you are in a church, and you are not comfortable speaking in front of a group, be encouraged by Colossians 3:17 “And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.”  And don’t be discouraged if you are accused of not “contributing” by someone who should know better.

As for us, we are looking forward to breaking bread tomorrow morning, just the two of us but there will really be three because the Lord Jesus promises in Matthew 18:20 “For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.”

Wild Rose with Matthew 5:8

This photo was taken in summer at the walk way of Somenos Marsh in the Cowichan Valley.  I loved the textures of this wild rose against the sturdiness of the fence and it reminds me the beauty of the pure in heart who will see God.

Cowichan River Trail in Autumn with Proverbs 2:8

The trail beside the Cowichan River is particularly beautiful in Autumn when leaves are blowing in the wind and the trail is strewn with them.  and even though this path is not very narrow, it is a reminder to me of Proverbs 2:8, that God preserveth the way of his saints and keepeth the paths of judgment.

Colossians 1:14 "...in Whom we have Redemption Through His Blood..."

This morning in our worship service, one of the older gentlemen read Colossians 1:14 thus “in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins;”.  Because I use the King James, I noticed right away that this version left out a very important phrase..  in the King James Colossians 1:14 reads thus “In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins.”   So my question is, how can there be redemption without the precious blood of Christ.  I do not know why the translators of his particular version left out the blood, but to me that is a very important thing.  What does the bible say about the blood of Christ?  I do not know how many times “blood” is left out in other versions, but here are some verses on this subject from the King James that I think are very important, and I have a challenge to anyone who reads this..  Compare these verses with your version, and see how many times the precious blood of Christ is left out..  If it is, you have a watered-down version, and a watered-down version brings a watered -down gospel, and a watered-down gospel brings a  watered-down salvation..
Matthew 26:28 “For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.”

Acts 20:28 “Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood

Romans 3:25 “Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;”

Romans 5:9 “Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.”

Ephesians 1:7 “In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;”

Ephesians 2:7 “But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.”

Colossians 1:20 “And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven.”

Hebrews 9:12 “Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.”

Hebrews 9:14 “How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?”

Hebrews 10:19 “Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus,”

1 Peter 1:2 “Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied.”

1 Peter 1:19 “But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:”

1 John 1:7 “But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.”

Revelation 1:5 “And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood,”

Revelation 5:9 “And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation;”

More on the Subject of Election

A few days ago I posted on the subject of election quoting bible verses.  This is a piece I wrote years ago on this subject.

The Word of God teaches us that God is sovereign.  Daniel 4:34-35 teaches us "..I blessed the most High, and I praised and honoured him that liveth for ever, whose dominion is an everlasting dominion, and his kingdom is from generation to generation: And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing: and he doeth according to his will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth: and none can stay his hand, or say unto him, What doest thou?"

Romans 3:23 teaches us that "all have sinned and come short of the glory of God."  But John 6:37 teaches us "All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out".  The choice of these people, the number of whom is known only to God the Father, is because of His grace, mercy, and love to undeserving sinners, and not because of anything they have done: Ephesians 2:8-9 "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast."

This does not mean that God is unfair, because of the fact, as previously said, that all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.  All deserve to come under the wrath of God on the day of judgment, but because God is merciful, He has chosen by his grace through faith to save some.

References from the Word of God:

Jonah 2:9 "Salvation is of the Lord"

Psalm 100:3 "Know ye that the LORD he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture."

Psalm 65:4 "Blessed is the man whom thou choosest, and causest to approach unto thee, that he may dwell in thy courts..."

Psalm 4:3 "But know that the LORD hath set apart him that is godly for himself:  the LORD will hear when I call unto him."

Matthew 19:25-26 "...when his disciples heard it, they were exceedingly amazed, saying, Who then can be saved?  But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible."
