Psalm 37: Trust the Lord in the Midst of Trials

For the first post in November,  here are a few verses and thoughts from Psalm 37:

V1-3 "Fret not thyself because of evildoers, neither be thou envious against the workers of iniquity.  For they shall soon be cut down like the grass, and wither as the green herb.  Trust in the Lord, and do good.....

These verses say to me that Christians ought  not to concern themselves and become anxious about all that goes on in this world of ours.  The Lord is in control and we may trust in him to take care of things according to his will.   Christians are to trust and to do good as we are led.

V4-5 "Delight thyself also in the Lord, and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.  Commit thy way unto the Lord; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass"

As we set our hearts on the Lord, he shall give Christians the desires of our hearts.  Now these are desires according to his will for us in an individual way.  I do not think however, that a desire for riches or worldly goods are things that are according to God's will.

Commit thy way unto the Lord reminds me of Proverbs 3:5-6 "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart and lean not unto thine own understanding.  In all thy ways acknowledge him and he shall direct thy paths."

V7 "Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for him: fret not thyself because of him who prospereth in his way, because of the man who bringeth wicked devices to pass."

The Christian is not to become anxious or stressed over the things that go on around him.  He is to rest in the Lord and wait patiently for the coming of the Lord Jesus, knowing that the Lord will carry us through whatever comes.

V9 "For evildoers shall be cut off: but those that wait upon the Lord, they shall inherit the earth."

V23-24 "The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord: and he delighteth in his way, though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down: for the Lord upholdeth him with his hand."

I am thankful that my steps are ordered by the Lord according to his will for me.  I delight in following the leading of the Lord because I have learned the hard way that whenever I did something that seemed right in my own eyes, it nearly always led to disaster.   Sometimes Christians fall through great trials in their life but they are not lost, as the Lord upholds them and restores them to fellowship when they come to the end of themselves and look to him.

V39 "..the salvation of the righteous is of the Lord: he is their strength in the time of trouble."

Who are the righteous?  Those who believed the gospel, that the Lord Jesus shed his precious blood and took upon himself the penalty for their sins.  That he gave up his spirit on Calvary's cross, that he was buried and rose again, that we who believe this may have salvation and hope of eternal life.

As Jonah said in the belly of the whale, salvation is of the Lord.  It is he who saved us.  According to Ephesians 2:8-9 we are saved by grace through faith, and this faith is not of ourselves, but is the gift of God.

The Lord is our strength in time of trouble, we just need to believe that and trust in him no matter what.

  1. Was blessed to come across your blog just now. Have been going through a very difficult trial that makes me ashamed at just how weak my faith really is...but thankful we serve a merciful Lord, Who, though we fall seven times, yet He lifts us up and upholds us with His hand. I desire so much to grow stronger in faith, by His grace, and come through the trial bringing honor to Him. Thank you for sharing God's Word on here!
