My last post from the gospel of John was of Jesus being condemned by Pilate to crucifixion and he was led away. Because John 19:17-42 covers many verses, they will be condensed and focus on the highlights and the sayings of Jesus as he hung on the cross. Jesus said 7 things while he was on the cross, only two of them are recorded in the gospel of John. Also, this gospel does not go into any detail of the darkness that fell on the land for three hours during which Jesus shed his precious blood and took upon himself the penalty for sin. This was the reason that Jesus came into this world, to redeem all those who call upon him by faith to be their Saviour.
V17-22 Jesus went forth to a place called Golgotha and was crucified there with two others, one on either side and Jesus in the midst. We read in the gospel of Luke that while at first both of these men railed upon Jesus, one of them recognized that he was receiving the punishment for what he had done and said to Jesus "Jesus, Lord, remember me when you come into your kingdom" and Jesus said to him, "today you shall be with me in Paradise." There is no age limit when men can be saved, until your last breath is taken, the Lord will save those who recognize that they are lost, and call upon Jesus to be their Saviour.
Pilate had a sign made and had it hung on the cross, this said "Jesus of Nazareth the King of the Jews. Pilate did condemn Jesus because of the threats of the Jews, but he found no fault in him. This sign was written in Hebrew, Greek and Latin. The chief priests were not happy about that and said that Pilate should change the sign to say that Jesus said I Am King of the Jews, but Pilate said that what he had written, he had written.
V25-27 Standing by the cross were Mary, the one who gave birth to Jesus, and two other Marys, one of them being Mary Magdalene, out of whom Jesus had driven seven devils. When Jesus saw his mother, and the disciple whom Jesus loved, (this was John who never calls himself by name) he said to his mother "Woman, behold thy son" And to the disciple he said "Behold thy mother!" and from that hour the disciple took Mary to his own home. With all Jesus had been through, and all he was going through, he lovingly provided for Mary.
V28-37 After this, Jesus knew that all things were accomplished, and he said "I thirst" and someone filled a sponge with vinegar, a sour wine used to prevent dehydration. The sponge was put onto a branch of Hyssop and put to the mouth of Jesus. When he had received the vinegar, he said "It is finished". The work for which the Lord Jesus had come into this world was complete, and so Jesus bowed his head, and gave up the ghost. No man can ever do this, no man can end his life at the moment of his choosing. After this the legs of the two men with Jesus were broken to cause them to suffocate and die, but they did not break the legs of Jesus because they saw he was dead already. But one of them pierced his side and from this wound came blood and water. "And he that saw it bear record, and his record is true, and he knows that he says true, that you might believe." The person who said this is John who wrote this gospel. Breaking the bones of the two men with Jesus but not breaking the bones of Jesus was written in fulfillment of scripture which says "A bone of him shall not be broken" And the piercing was also fulfillment of scripture, "they shall look upon him who they pierced."
V38-42 After the death of Jesus, two men who were disciples of Jesus in secret for fear of the Jews, came to Pilate and begged the body of Jesus. These were Joseph of Arimathaea and Nicodemus which at first came to Jesus at night. They brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, took the body of Jesus, wound it in linen cloths with the spices, and buried him in a sepulchre which was new, where no man had laid.
The next post will be about Jesus resurrection, and his appearances to Mary Magdalene and his disciples.
