Psalm 90: The Eternal LORD

Psalm 90 speaks of the LORD God as eternal, timeless and merciful.   This is a Psalm written by Moses.

V1-2 "LORD, thou hast been our dwelling place in all generations.  Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God."

For the believer, the Lord is our dwelling place.  We are to set our affection on things above, not on things on the earth (Col 3:2)  The believers true dwelling place is heaven.  We are  just pilgrims passing through this world.  V2 speaks of God the creator.  He was from everlasting and will be to everlasting, the Sovereign eternal God.

V4 .".a thousand years in thy sight are but as yesterday when it is past, and as a watch in the night."

How can the human mind comprehend this?  we cannot.  To me this  is why it is impossible to try and put current events into God's timetable (as it is the manner of some to do) because we cannot know where we are in God's timetable as it were.

V10 "The days of our years are three-score years and ten; and if by  reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labour and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away."

This verse is really something to think about.  Man's time on this earth is an imperceptible point of time in regards to all of history, a mere 70 years or 80 but the later years are weakened by a failing strength and sorrow for things we see around us.  Soon our years are  cut off, and we fly away to the grave.  For the believer, his soul goes to be with the Lord Jesus but for the unbeliever it is not so.  Paul the apostle said in 2 Corinthians chapter 5:6-8 "..we are always confident knowing that, whilst we are at home in the body, we are absent from the LORD: (For we walk by faith not by sight:)  We are confident, I  say, and willing rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord.."  These are comforting words for the believer.

A couple of years ago I wrote a devotion concerning "we fly away" and posted it on this blog, here is the link:  Devotion: Fly Away

V12 "So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom."

Since we do not know the length of our days on this earth,  let the believer spend much time in the Word of God, learning and applying it to his life.  Let much more of our time be devoted to spiritual things than be spent on hobbies or activities.

V13, 14 is a plea for God's mercy.  "Return, O LORD, how long? ...O satisfy us early with thy mercy; that we may rejoice and be glad all our days."

The writer of this Psalm wonders how long it will be before the Lord returns.  But we are taught in the New Testament that we are not to know the day or the hour, or the times or the seasons of the Lord's return.  We are to be watchful as though it will be the next moment.  The Lord will come in his perfect time.  Until he comes, the writer prays for God's mercy that we might rejoice in him and be glad all our days no matter what comes.

V17 "..let the beauty of the LORD our God be upon us: and  establish thou the work of our hands upon us; yea, the work of our hands establish thou it."

The Christian desires to reflect that they are saved.   The Christian desires to please the Lord in all that they do.  Ephesians 2:10 speaks to this: "For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them".  Christians do not do good works to be saved, but they do good works as they are led by the Spirit to show that they are saved.
