More on the Subject of Election

A few days ago I posted on the subject of election quoting bible verses.  This is a piece I wrote years ago on this subject.

The Word of God teaches us that God is sovereign.  Daniel 4:34-35 teaches us "..I blessed the most High, and I praised and honoured him that liveth for ever, whose dominion is an everlasting dominion, and his kingdom is from generation to generation: And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing: and he doeth according to his will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth: and none can stay his hand, or say unto him, What doest thou?"

Romans 3:23 teaches us that "all have sinned and come short of the glory of God."  But John 6:37 teaches us "All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out".  The choice of these people, the number of whom is known only to God the Father, is because of His grace, mercy, and love to undeserving sinners, and not because of anything they have done: Ephesians 2:8-9 "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast."

This does not mean that God is unfair, because of the fact, as previously said, that all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.  All deserve to come under the wrath of God on the day of judgment, but because God is merciful, He has chosen by his grace through faith to save some.

References from the Word of God:

Jonah 2:9 "Salvation is of the Lord"

Psalm 100:3 "Know ye that the LORD he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture."

Psalm 65:4 "Blessed is the man whom thou choosest, and causest to approach unto thee, that he may dwell in thy courts..."

Psalm 4:3 "But know that the LORD hath set apart him that is godly for himself:  the LORD will hear when I call unto him."

Matthew 19:25-26 "...when his disciples heard it, they were exceedingly amazed, saying, Who then can be saved?  But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible."

Romans 8:28-30 "And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God (and the following is almost always left out) to them who are the called according to his purpose.  For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.  Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified."

Romans 9:15 "For he saith to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.  So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that showeth mercy."

1 Thessalonians 2:13 ".......God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth."

and there are many more references to God's choosing..  therefore, if you have responded to the gospel, repented and believed on the Lord Jesus Christ as your Saviour, rejoice and be glad, giving thanks to God the Father..  this doctrine should not bring division.
